Sunrise, Sunset

Dang, Ban's nieces are looking more and more like young women and less like little girls! We celebrated their birthdays yesterday by making pizzas at Gloria's house. Ban and I picked up a couple of derby t-shirts from my friend Veronica who has her own derby-related clothing line Scarred Derby Designs. You can check out her website here. I also picked up a few pairs of knee socks from Target which went the shirts. The girls decided to wear mismatched knee socks. I think they look adorable! Plus, the girls were looking great on their skates. Future derby girls?

AWOL

I have been so uninspired to write lately. I decided to give myself a break and not feel badly about not posting but the weeks have flown by. I am changing my strategy now and getting back into the habit of writing.

This morning I had a great time skating with Cleavers during a private practice. I loved seeing the girls and meeting the new Cleavers. The team looked great. The new girls are fit and enthusiastic. Before today, it has been months since I've been on my skates which is so strange since for two years I was on them anywhere between two and four times a week. Not too surprisingly, my tender little foot is now sporting a blister and my right hip is aching from the pressure of skating those tight circles. Amazing how quickly you lose all that conditioning.

I'm excited for the Cleavers and can't wait to see them bout although I think it may be hard to just watch from the sidelines.

I'm in a Commercial!

My former team mate, Nico Noir, who also happens to be a film-maker, just completed this commercial for the Salt City Derby Girls. I think she did a fantastic job, don't you? If you look very closely around the eleven second mark you'll see me as the Trax train passes by. No word yet on when and where the commercial will air but I'll keep you posted.

Surprise!

Last night my beautiful Cleavers threw me a surprise party at Diva's Cupcakes. I was shocked speechless as I walked in and saw them all sitting there. I LOVED seeing them, not seeing them has been the most difficult part of not playing roller derby anymore. You can't see it in the photo but on the coffee table in front of us were plates full of cupcakes. I had a wonderful time and am so happy to spend time with those lovely girls.

Wasatch Woman Magazine

As many of you know, I'm a bit of a twitter junkie and as such, I've had the opportunity to meet an amazing number of really cool people. One of the people who I've 'tweeted' with is Pam Baumiester, editor of Wasatch Woman magazine. Earlier this summer she mentioned that she'd like to do a piece on roller derby for the magazine.

Late in August, I was contacted by Rebecca Edwards, a super groovy writer for Wasatch Woman. She wanted to interview me for an article on women athletes in Utah. How cool is that? We met for lunch and basically chatted about how I got into roller derby. She was taking notes on a legal pad but it really felt more like a conversation than an interview. I thought she did a great job weaving our conversation into a funny article.

In September, we did the photo shoot for the article. They had a magician, I mean, make-up artist and hair stylist work me over. Kitty did such a great job that I've started having her do my hair in real life too. Once 'done up' the photographer, Scott kept me relaxed and laughing with his laid back demeanor. He also humored me asking a thousand questions about photography, cameras, lighting, etc.

I was so nervous about the whole thing. I felt a little vulnerable at the beginning. Who knew how they would portray me and my sport? But from start to finish, the entire experience was fantastic and I'm so pleased with the final product! You can check it out here.

Cleavers Win!

Last Saturday night, the Leave it to Cleavers beat the Sisters of No Mercy 125 - 68 and thus remained undefeated and league champs for the second year in a row! I am so proud of my team. They are a spectacular group of women and I am fortunate to call them teammates and friends. Whip It

This October Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Whip It. Ellen Page stars as the disgruntled small town beauty pageant contestant who falls in love with roller derby to her parents dismay. I'm bummed that they chose to portray banked track when it is flat track that has had the powerful resurgence but whatevs. I'm still excited about the movie. Check out the trailer.

Salt City vs Sin City

Saturday night, our All-Star team, the Shakers, are back in action against the ladies of the Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls. We beat them last year and are looking for a repeat. Playing teams from other leagues is always exciting and nerve-wracking. When we play against our home teams, we know who the threats are and how to play against them. When we play other leagues, it's a bit of crap shoot until partway through the first half. We'll be forced to make adjustments on the fly.

Also, one of our announcers, Lulu Garou, will be spinning 80s dance tunes at the after party at South Shore Bar & Grill (2827 S State) after the bout. No matter who wins on the track on Saturday, the girls from Sin City will be tough to beat on the dance floor but we are going to give them a run for their money out there too!

Hey You with the Coconut Bra Top

This Saturday afternoon, the Salt City Derby Girls are hosting a luau. So, dig up that grass skirt and head over for some roast pig and loads of fun. I'll be in Seattle this weekend for Lauren's graduation so I'll miss out on the Hawaiian fun. If you go, take lots of pictures for me, ok?

Happy (and Soggy) SLC Pride Parade

Today was the annual SLC Pride Parade. The Pride parade is always a great time. I find it a soul affirming display of tolerance that is somewhat unexpected in Salt Lake. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate this morning. The skies opened up and poured rain down on the parade goers.


Salt City Derby Girls skated again in the parade and many girls braved the rain in their skates and short skirts. After a nasty fall last night in the Cleavers/Bombers bout and a bruised hip bone, I decided to by-pass the skates this morning and walked the route instead. Plus, I wasn't super keen on exposing my skates to wet. The picture above is from Salt Lake Tribune's website.

Despite the weather, the derby girls had a blast and it seemed like most of the people lining the parade route were having a great time too.

Salt City Shakers vs Junction City

The Salt City Shakers All-Star travel team is made up of players from all four home teams (Bombers, Cleavers, Dealers & Sisters). The Shakers play teams from other leagues. This Saturday the Shakers' season kicks off as we play Junction City Roller Girls from Ogden. History will be made on Saturday as this will be the first (of hopefully many!) inter-league bouts with teams from Utah.

The Shakers will also be playing the Fabulous Sin City Roller Girls from Vegas in June and then we'll take it on the road as we face Junction City in Ogden, and Reno and LA at their home turf. We are super excited about our roster this year and are looking forward to a terrific season.

Salt City Derby Girls Pool Tournament

Tomorrow night, we'll be at the Point After (located within the Sports Mall). There will be a live band, dancing, a raffle with awesome prizes, and of course, the pool tournament. Cover charge is $3 and registration for the pool tournament is $25. First place takes a cash prize.
